Waystation Updates

Around 160 people visited our Monarch Waystation for the Master Gardeners’ Garden Walk on July 16. It was a beautiful day for welcome, participation, and learning about monarchs, their migration, and habitat actions we all can take. On Monday, July 23, Martha, Diana, and Randy will be welcoming a girl scout troop from Garden Prairie UCC. These girls, their leader, and parents were among the great throng of people who collected plastic with us for our recycled garden benches. Part of their program will make use of a Monarch Butterfly Project that Lars recently prepared for 4H. His project won both a first place ribbon and a state ribbon. On Thursday, August 23, farming couples from DeKalb, DuPage, and Kane counties will enjoy a Pollinator Breakfast at church, see the Waystation, and learn about the possibilities of planting pollinator habitats on pieces of land that aren’t suitable for large scale farming. Our annual fall worship service will take place in the Waystation on Sunday, September 9. The Waystation is also going to be woven into our 2018-19 confirmation class. If you haven’t spent any time there recently, stop by. So much is in bloom. Monarchs and other butterflies are flitting about. And Monarch caterpillars can be spotted on the undersides of milkweed leaves. We anticipate our plastic will be transported to southern Indiana soon, and then the benches will be made.

Thank you for your support of the UCC Christmas Offering and the Northern Illinois Food Bank this month.

August Mayfield Fellowship Meeting

The August Mayfield Fellowship meeting will be held on August 9 at Prairie State Winery, 222 W. Main Street in Genoa, at 11:30 am. We will be ordering lunch at the winery. Following lunch our host JT will give us a tour of the winery’s production area. We hope you can join us. This meeting will provide an opportunity for us to hear about the history and current activities of this award winning local business. Please use the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Area at church to let us know you are attending. There is another sheet there with the information on lunch choices for the day.

Future 2018 Mayfield Fellowship Meetings Include:
October 11 at Oakcrest where we will share lunch in their dining room and have an informative program provided by Safe Passage.
December 13 our annual Christmas meeting will be at Wilma and Rita’s. We are all invited to bring a dish to share and board books for the Children’s Waiting Room. At this December meeting we will divide the money collected by the Fellowship during 2018 among various agencies and programs in DeKalb County, hear a Christmas story, and participate in a robust rendering of the 12 days of Christmas.

August Church Council Meeting is Wednesday, August 15 at 6:00 pm.

Mayfield Members and Friends

If you have not already done so, please check your entry on the listing of the Mayfield Members and Friends and make any necessary edits – corrections or additions. The current sheets for this list are laid out on a table in the Gathering Area. The Deacons – Jan, Karen, and Theresa – will use those edited sheets for the creation of a 2018 edition of Mayfield Members and Friends. Thank you for your assistance.

Pastoral Care Notes

Our love and prayers are with Pastor Bill as he faces surgery at the end of the month and with Sue Goudy whose mother died late last week. Thank you to Mayfield people for helping TJ get to work and to Rita for organizing that support network. Rob continues to heal well from his surgery several weeks ago. Our prayers are with Jen as she visits the Jane Adeny Memorial School in Kenya over the next two weeks. She will be there to support Nelle as she begins their music program and to celebrate in person with Anita and her classmates when they graduate. We have enjoyed having Kenn, Betty Lou, Heather, and her children, Charles, Wini, and Iris in worship with us this month.
