Socially Isolated but Spiritually Connected
And Children Shall Lead

And a little child shall lead them. (Isaiah 11:6)

Dear Mayfield,

One of my favorite prophetic lines is the one above from Isaiah 11:6. It is a verse we usually hear during Advent. Sometimes it is a little child who is leading; at other times it is a medium-sized child who takes the lead. I think of Anne Frank’s diary from the 1940’s and Greta Thunberg’s climate leadership today. In the picture above, I love how Brazilian muralist Eduardo Kobra has captured the possibility of coexistence in the hands, the prayers, and the actions of children among us.

Not all of the children or young people who lead us are so far away. Some of them are right here in Illinois. Using this LINK we can experience the leadership of Cass Junior High School 7th Grade English students.  With the inspiration of Mrs. Polacek, they have crafted a collaborative poem to remind us of the possibilities of having a 360 degree perspective on Covid-19. Savor the words of these young leaders from Darien, Illinois. There will be another 360 degree opportunity, this one musical, featured in Sunday’s worship and reflection materials.

Peace, Martha
