Looking Ahead to the First Several Weeks of Advent
On December 1, we will begin our new church year in the season of Advent. Advent encompasses the four Sundays prior to Christmas and is filled with preparation and expectancy as here in the Northern hemisphere days continue to shorten and the darkness deepens. This year we will enter Advent with the theme Dwell in Hope. Your presence will be appreciated in body and in spirit. Below are the details for the first couple weeks of Advent:
- General Notes: Once again, we will be collecting unwrapped teen gifts for Toys for Tots. Popular gifts are small electronics, sports equipment, bath and body products, clothing for local sports teams, hats/scarfs/gloves/mittens, and games. Bring your gifts to church by Sunday, December 15. We will be making gift bags of all sizes for Toys for Tots wrapping. Gift bag workshops will be held on Sundays December 1, 8, and 15. There will be a special photo op during this holiday season with an old favorite at Mayfield. Watch for more details in coming weeks. Our Advent/Christmas mission project will be a collection for our 2020 Scholarship for JAMS. $800 will be needed for our student’s next school year which begins in the winter. Please mark your gifts for JAMS.
- Sunday, December 1– Advent 1– Hope Up Close – Several Mayfield folks will share their own experiences of maintaining hope even on the most challenging days. Gift bags will be made after worship for Toys for Tots
- Sunday, December 8 – Advent 2 – Hope as Refugia – There will be an intergenerational labyrinth walk at 9:00 am, new and returning walkers of all ages are welcome. Worship will draw on the wisdom of the earth. Following the service, there will be a second opportunity to make gifts bags for Toys for Tots wrapping. Thanks to our Deacons – Cary, Jan, and Theresa for this year’s decorating.
- Thursday, December 12 – Mayfield Fellowship will meet at Thoma and Duane’s, 28882 Brickville, Sycamore at noon. Bring a delicious dish to share and board books for Court Watch. We will make decisions about this year’s gifts to area agencies and programs in DeKalb County, share in a rousing rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas, and enjoy a Christmas story. Use the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Area at church to indicate you are coming.
Throughout the Year
- We have whole hog sausage available for sale at church. $5 per pound, bulk and patties.
- We support the work of the Northern Illinois Food Bank in addressing the needs around hunger and food insecurity in thirteen northern Illinois counties. Food Bank gifts can be given in the food bank box or the offering plates.
The next memo will be sent during the first week of December.
