Mayfield Memo 02202019

We need the cardboard fronts of boxes – cereal boxes, cake mixes, granola bar boxes, cracker boxes, etc. We just need the box front, not the entire box. You can recycle the rest of the box at home. Please bring them to church and leave them on one of the long tables in the Gathering Area. They will be the used in a project our children are undertaking for the The Bookcase Project. Thanks.

A Reminder to Our Families with Children

This Sunday our children will be meeting with Becky after the Children’s Time in worship. There is not a class at 9:00 am. Make sure your children come with the lists made at home of groups of people to include in our prayer activity.

DeKalb/Sycamore Bookcase Project

We will be represented tomorrow night at the Bookcase Banquet by Ann Thompson, Rob Spanton, Rob Stoll, and Wilma Miranda.

Keep the books coming, new and gently used picture books. We will be collecting them through early March.

Transformation Through Rhythm

This year’s Transformation Through Rhythm concert will be held at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, this Sunday, February 24, at 2:00 pm. The concert is free; donations are gladly received. 100% of the concert proceeds will benefit Knysna Sedgefield Hospice, Knysna, South Africa. Jen has been the organizing energy at the center of this concert for a number of years, and Sue has been on the planning committee. The musicians featured include:  DeKalb High School Percussion Ensemble, NIU Percussion Ensemble, and Harambee African Percussion Ensemble. Musicians in the various ensembles range in age from elementary school kids to high school and college students, to teachers and professors at DeKalb High School and NIU. This is an opportunity for us to experience wondrous world music and to extend vital support to a South African hospice program.

Northern Illinois Food Bank

Your ongoing support of the Northern Illinois Food Bank is appreciated. Every $1 donated is converted into $8 of food. Your gifts may be placed in either the food bank box or the offering plate. The severity of this winter has placed additional pressures on our neighbors requiring food support.

Oscar Note

With the Oscars rewarded this Sunday, keep an eye out for Minding the Gap in the Documentary Feature category. It is the work Bing Liu, a talented 30 year old documentary director from Rockford who is now working on his next film in Chicago. This film can be seen on Hulu.

RSVP to the Robs

Remember to let the Robs know by Sunday, March 3, if you are interested in joining the group going to see Come From Away on August 3, 2019. A really good group of Mayfield people is forming for this Chicago theatre field trip.

Good News from the Wintering Monarchs in Mexico

The World Wildlife Fund has released its data from the annual survey of monarch overwintering sites in Mexico. The news is very positive. Monarchs are counted by the number of acres they cover during their communal hibernation. This year’s acreage is the highest it has been since the winter of 2006-07. The hope is that this is the beginning of an upward trend. Monarch enthusiasts like those of us committed to the Monarch Waystation are encouraged to continue protecting habitat, planting milkweed, and maintaining nectar sources for the Monarchs.
