I want to tell you about one of the best days of the Christmas season. It happens a couple of days before Winter Break, but it is one the of the BEST DAYS EVER!
For the last 4 years on the Tuesday before Christmas, along with my family and many friends, we spend the day at the Salvation Army helping with the Toys for Tots giveaway in DeKalb County. This giveaway is for families that need extra help buying presents for their kids.
I have helped do several different jobs at this event. I have helped be a personal shopper. I walk with the parents from room to room to pick out the presents for their kids. I have helped wrap gifts. We wrap the gifts that the parents choose, and lastly I have helped keep the rooms stocked with toys. In the basement of the Salvation Army, all the toys that were donated are kept in groups for each age group. I keep watch of all the toy rooms and bring more toys from the basement to make sure there is a good selection of toys the whole time.
We get to the Salvation Army at about 8:30 AM and we start with breakfast. We then have a meeting of all the volunteers and we learn what the jobs are for the day. We set up the wrapping tables and then they ring the bell and the doors open about 9:30 AM. We take a break about 11 o’clock and eat a lunch from different restaurants in DeKalb and Sycamore. We finish the day by about 5:00 PM We are on our feet all day, but it is the best feeling in the world to see the happy parents. Last year the Toys for Tots served over 2000 kids in DeKalb County. (Lars recently wrote this essay. Not only did it win first prize in an essay contest, it also captures the spirit of Mayfield’s participation in the Salvation Army Toys-for-Tots Wrapathon. This year’s wrapping day was held on Tuesday, December 16. About 15 Mayfield members and friends were present.)
